My favorite Android apps so far!

I’ve had several friends recently take the Android plunge and ask me what apps that i’m using, so I decided to write them up in a list for everyone to enjoy and comment on. They’re listed in no particular order and I’ve provided a link to them in the doubleTwist app catalog so you can read a description and scan the QR code to install.

If you’re new to Android, this app is the first thing you need to install. With it, you can scan the square bar codes (QR codes) on the app pages and your Android device will fire right into the market and let you install the app. So simple! Check out the description and icon on the following page, then search the Android market on your device and load the one with the same icon. It’s free and it works.

Once you’re ready with that, you’re going to need a good keyboard. I’ve said it before, and i’ll say it again. Swype is the way to go. It’s currently in Beta right now so you won’t be able to get it from the Android market, but trust me when I tell you that it’s worth signing up for the Beta and replacing your old keyboard with the Swype one. Here’s the link to the developer’s site. Give Swype a week as your default input method and you won’t go back.

Now that you’re able to Swype and ready to barcode scan, check out the following links and load some apps!

I hope you enjoy these apps as much as I have. Feel free to comment on them or make recommendations of your own.

Special Thanks to House of The Faculty for providing me with some updates and several of these apps.

Good list. I didnt get in on the beta for swype but I do pretty well with the qwerty touchscreen. I liked K9 as well but am currently using Maildroid as it seems to have better IMAP support. I’m liking yelp so far. I will try out some of the other apps listed. Thanks for taking the time to make a list for us Android noobs.

Not a problem sir. I’m glad I could help.

Just hold tight on the Swype beta. Took me about two weeks to get the email. Go ahead and sign up if you haven’t already.

I’ll have to check out Maildroid as well. I like K-9 so far and it works great with my IMAP/SSL setups, but that’s not my primary email any more so I haven’t really stressed it yet.

Well I went back to K9 as I was having trouble with Maildroid’s notifications. Now my next question…to root or not to root? :-)

My main motivation for rooting would be to delete some of the crapware that comes on the phone, however with Froyo around the corner I’m not sure if I should just wait.

Some of the cyanogen mods look pretty nice, but i’m holding out for 2.2. The mods for the Evo had some nasty broken things last time I checked so I think I’ll just hold out for Sprint to hook up me up.

Well I got tired of waiting for Froyo so I rooted and installed it today. It’s not a night and day improvement, but it was worth it. Now I’m contemplating whether to do the s-off root method to prevent the phone from being locked again before the OTA comes out.

No FroYo for the Incredible yet? The Evo actually got it on 8/2. (My freakin’ birthday, what a sweet day that was!)

I wonder what is taking VZW so long? They did the Droid and Droid X from what I understand.

The Droid is being rolled out now, but Michelle’s hasn’t received the OTA yet. Not sure about the Droid X. Verizon is notoriously slow with updates though, I had the same issues with my BB. Fortunately I’m handy with a command line :-)

I’m running the stock 2.2 and like it so far. I haven’t had any issues, but you know me, I can never leave well enough alone. I will probably try out some different ROMs this weekend. Some of the skyraider stuff looks cool.

My favorite app is called “What’s for Lunch?”. It’s an app to help you find a place to eat based on GPS zip code. The funny part is the monkey who will find a random place for you to eat. He does funny things and the backgrounds look like Jersey shore crew, Howard Stern and Charlie Sheen. Funny app.
