Ahhhh, the joys of the standards compliance…
Posted by ekrunch in Rants, Technology on December 30, 2008
After managing to build a functional copy of MediaTomb for my DroboShare, I then found out that it doesn’t support the Xbox 360. Yay… the single device that I wanted to work with it. Oh well, I suppose I should have loaded up the Ubuntu based version first or something beforehand. According to the authors of MediaTomb, it is the fault of Microsoft. That I can believe. I have yet to do a protocol trace but I do know that most other UPnP media servers have a special switch that you have to flip to make it work with the Xbox 360. What a bummer… so much for the UPnP “standard”.
A little pee came out

I’ll probably never play the game, but this review gets my vote for one of the best of all times. Anything titled “A little pee came out: Ars reviews the scares of Dead Space” can’t be that bad, right? Make sure to check out the “Good/Bad” section on the last page. Priceless stuff. Way to keep me reading Ars.
My most recent UPS experience
Posted by ekrunch in Personal, Rants, Useful Information on July 3, 2008
Has anyone noticed a steady decline of service quality in UPS here lately? My last few run-ins with UPS have not been pleasant.
The last major item that came in via UPS was a server that I purchased. It was damaged… I know the box was heavy and all but it had obviously been dropped on its corner. It was wet outside that day and I could see the water on the corner so I assume it happened on the way up to my door. No major damage, just the face place. Bummer. The next week the rails for the server came in and the box for them had suffered the same fate. The sad part… both packages were packed by “professionals” at the UPS store and shipped to me in UPS boxes packed by UPS employees. Pitiful.
I recently had to send my Xbox 360 back for service due to my run in with the Red Ring of Death. The UPS guy showed up with the empty box that Microsoft sends you and we both had a good chuckle because he already knew I had a dead console based on the address of where it came from and the fact that it was empty. He smiled and said he’d see me in a few weeks when they returned the console in that same box. Off to UPS my Xbox 360 went and one week later I get a notice from MS saying that it has been shipping back. (48 hour turn around, bravo Microsoft Xbox service center!)
Now I’m excited… I’m ready to have my Xbox 360 again. And here’s where the drama begins.
- 07/02/2008, Afternoon some time – I receive a call from an unfamiliar number. It’s an automated message from UPS saying I have a package arriving tomorrow that will require a signature. I jump online and look at the tracking number Microsoft gave me. Sure enough, it’s my Xbox. Now i’m really excited.
- 07/03/2008, 08:00 – I’m at home, waiting for my Xbox.
- 07/03/2008, 10:00 – I decide to track my package. I get the weirdest message… something is wrong with the label on the package but apparently it has been repaired. The package no longer has a delivery date and says “Exception” instead. Weird, but okay, whatever.
- 07/03/2008, 11:20 – I track the package again. The package is now back to normal status… to be delivered on Monday! Too bad i’m going to be out of town all next week and i’m already sitting on my tail at home waiting for this package. No big deal. I’ll just call UPS and set it up for a “will call” pickup.
- 07/03/2008, 11:23 – I call UPS. I get a really nice lady who tells me that she’ll have someone from the Palatine, IL center call me back within one hour with a status as to when I can pick my package up. Now i’m happy again. Nice lady too.
- 07/03/2008, 11:37 – Marie from Palatine center calls me. Wow! Fast response! Go UPS! But wait… The package never made it to Palatine this morning. It must be on the truck! Marie tells me that she’s going to find out and she’ll call me back. No problem. Now we’re getting somewhere and maybe the web site is just out of date. If a UPS Representative is reading this post, Marie was a really nice lady as well. She really was making an effort to help… read on for the part where the experience goes bad.
- 07/03/2008, 11:45 – Once again, super fast response from UPS Palatine. They’re either really good or really bored.
Either way, i’m happy that they’re being so responsive. Marie tells me that the package is not on the truck nor in Palatine and that I can expect it Monday. If nothing else, call her and she’ll put the package on hold in Palatine and I can pick it up when I return. I’m a little angry at this point because i’ve now stayed at home today waiting for them. If I worked a normal desk job i’d have had to have taken off of work and would be pissed that my package didn’t show. But whatever, okay. I’ll figure something out. - 07/03/2008, 12:03 – I decide to call UPS corporate back and have them track my package. Them not being able to tell me where it is right now is unacceptable. They really need to at least provide me with a current location of the package because it should be in Palatine. I get another nice lady at UPS corporate. I tell her the story and that neither Palatine nor the driver have it and I would like to know the location and expected delivery date so that I can make arrangements for someone to be home to sign for it. She tells me that it’s not a problem and she’ll have someone from the main Chicago center call me. It must be there still.
- 07/03/2008, 12:27 – UPS Palatine calls again. Wait? UPS Palatine? Why would they call me. I was expecting a call from Chicago center. Hmmmmm… Okay. It’s not Marie this time. It’s some other lady that I didn’t catch her name. She was talking too fast and in a very abrasive tone. She “informs” me that she was sitting next to Marie when I was on the phone and that there’s nothing else she can do. She then tells me that my package should go out on Monday and that I need to call by 07:30 on Monday morning if I want to have them pull it from the truck for a Monday will call. I started to explain to her that I wouldn’t be in town but decided to just save it because she’s obviously angry at me for calling again and isn’t going to help me. She was quite possibly one of the rudest customer service representatives that i’ve ever spoken to.
- 07/03/2008, 12:35 – The second time I called UPS, the lady told me that i’d have to call the sender of the package to escalate any further. It was a nice way of telling me to stop calling and that they weren’t going to help me anymore. So, that’s what I did. I called Microsoft. Unlike my first experience with Xbox 360 support, I get a really unfriendly individual with poor english skills. Oh joy… i’m screwed. I explain the situation. The first thing he does it try to give me the UPS tracking number and disconnect the call. I explain that I have the tracking number and I need Microsoft to escalate with UPS. He then proceeds to track the package himself and tells me that it will be here tomorrow. I try to explain again. He tells me he’s going to let me talk to his supervisor. After almost 15 minutes of holding, he returns… no supervisor on the phone. He then trys to give me the URL to get to UPS and track the pacakge. I explain to him that i’ve already done it. He tells me “but the status was updated 10 minutes ago!”. I jump on and check and no, it wasn’t… he’s in a different time zone and doesn’t realize that the web site isn’t updating for his timezone. I explain to him that it’s in central time, not wherever he is. That update was 1h10m ago, not 10m ago. Oh joy… I have one of “those” customer service representatives. We go back and forth for a few mintues with him insisting that my Xbox will be at my home tomorrow. I explain that tomorrow is a holiday and he just does not get it. I guess when you don’t celebrate Independence Day as a good US citizen should, you wouldn’t know that. He tells me that he’s going to go talk to his supervisor again, after another 10 minutes, I hang up.
Do I have a right to be angry? I think I do. UPS called me and said I needed to be here. I stayed home and waited, only for them to say that something is wrong with the label. It made it all the way from Texas to Chicago before somebody noticed the label? It was supposedly illegible. Funny… it was legible when they used it to look up my customer record for my phone number.
My other concern is that they can’t find the package and aren’t willing to help me track it. I wonder who’s kid just got a repaired Xbox 360. Only time will tell but it bothers me that UPS employees know the box and address of repaired Xbox 360’s that well. Even the UPS Corporate lady made a joke about it.
Maybe i’m over reacting here but damn… what an annoyance. A total array of cluster f*** just to get an Xbox shipped from Texas to Chicago. Time to find a new shipping carrier.
Still alive?
They finally did it. Rock Band got a new free download, the ending song from Portal. GLaDOS finally gets to take another shot at me by making me play that song over and over again on Expert. Call me a geek or whatever, but hey, i’m Still Alive.
Well, I was “still alive” until Microsoft took my Xbox 360 away from me. I suppose GLaDOS finally get her way and just blew up my Xbox so I couldn’t finish the song. Little did she know, it’s still under warranty.
Microsoft decided I can’t play Xbox 360 anymore.

Well folks, I got hit tonight. I was about to kick into some Rock Band and there was an update out for my Xbox 360… I downloaded it, rebooted, and the console worked fine. I grabbed my trusty guitar and went after it. Two songs into it, the game crashed and locked up the console. Okay, bad sign, it’s never locked up like this before. I reboot, it comes back! I hit the button to start Rock Band, the game freezes at the opening screen… console lucked up complete again. So now i’m thinking that it must be that the update broke Rock Band. I’ll be angry but I know they’ll fix it soon so no big deal… right? Oh wait, the console locked up again, this time at the green Xbox 360 boot screen. That’s not good. Not good at all. One more reboot and it finally happens.
Red Ring of Death.
The feared “General Hardware Failure”. I’ve checked the power supply, it has a green light and should be good to go. I’ve pulled all of the cables and reseated them. I’ve removed the hard drive. Nothing. It’s dead. No more Xbox 360 for me. Fortunately, i’ve never cracked the case and Microsoft has extended the warranty of the console. Oh well, if i’m lucky, i’ll get an updated premium console with the HDMI output. That’d be nice.
Anyway, thanks to Microsoft for ruining my night (and my successful Expert career in Rock Band!)
Hooray for crap software! 24 hours of Electronic Arts’ finest.

Based on the recommendation of a friend, I went out and purchased Battlefield : 2142. Yet another work of art… no pun intended.
As usual with EA games, something doesn’t work right out of the box, this time it was the registration utility. Oh sure, I only had to re-enter my serial number, but it was just a sign of the bad programming to come. That registration routine had a glitch in it that caused my serial number to get turned to garbage… it was one of those “hold the delete key for 30 seconds and then type in the right code” errors. No big deal… just a Testament of things to come.
On to the game! First, let’s see if there’s a patch… it’s been out for a while, surely there’s a patch. Ah ha, the 1.25 patch. 300MB?!?!?!?? For a patch? Oh well, I must get tons of new content with the patch. (Or maybe not)
Finally! Patch loaded and i’m in! Ready to game! Okay, pop in the clan tag and the player name and we’re rolling. Wait a second… no spaces in the names? Bummer. Another sign of the horror that awaited me.
Alright, first stop, options. Keymaps – Check. Video – Check. Audo – Wait a sec… the voice command won’t let me select a secondary sound card for voice input / output. Weird… TeamSpeak does, Ventrillo does… BF2142’s voice engine doesn’t. Bummer. True bummer. Well, i’m not reconfiguring my PC for one game, so, voice support off… moving on. Having done some DirectSound programming way back in the day, I don’t remember it being that difficult to enumerate the sound card list and display a choice to the user as opposed to just lighting up the default. I suppose that extra 20 lines of code was too much to ask. I’m sure it falls into the “Nobody will use this” category. Yeah, except all of the people with a Sound Blaster and an onboard sound card. Or a USB headset… which appears as a virtual sound card. Or a bluetooth headset, which also appears as a virtual sound card. But nobody has those, so we’ll just move on.
Okay, finally… let’s play! We’ll start with single player as i’ve never played this game before and a good bot match will get me used to the game engine. That way i’ll have at least played the game before I go out and get my few weeks of spankings as a new player online.
Here we go! Single player, select maps, and start the game! Woot! After an excruciating optimization thing, the level loaded and now I can’t get in to the game. It shows the “kit” screen, I pick my kit and hit “Select Spawnpoints”. Nothing. That must just be a tab or something, even though it looks like a button. So, i’ll just click on some spawn points! Nope, nothing happening here either. Oh wait, I need to join a squad… Okay! Click the squad tab, here’s three… I click join. Good. Now i’m in a squad. I click the “continue” button (which looks exactly like the “select waypoints”, which isn’t a button.)
Game up! I’m in… no wait… i’m not. I can’t spawn. A few seconds go by and now the squad screen shows up. Okay, let’s see, let’s click all over the place and see what happens. Nothing. Nothing happens. I get a clicking noise as a conformation that i’ve done something, but no responses on anything except for leave squad, create squad, and join squad. I create a new squad with me in it, hit the manage squad button, and that interface doesn’t seem to work either. I must be crazy… it must be me… right?
I bust out the mighty Google and start running queries. Sure enough, others are having the same problem. Single player is broken in this 1.25 patch. Most people’s response in the help forums is something along the lines of “But why do you care? Single player sucks!”. Gee, that’s helpful. So now I have two options, I upgrade to the new “beta” 1.40 patch, or downgrade via uninstall/reinstall. This is just sick. I’ve also seen reports that the 1.40 beta patch has the same issue. So much for the QA process.
I fiddled around with the multi player and decided I didn’t want to bother. The spawn works in the multi player, but I die so fast it’s not even funny. I can’t get the good weapons b/c they have to be “unlocked”. Which can be difficult for those who have no clue how to play the game.
So, thank you again EA for a “pleasurable” game experience.
I’d also like to take this moment to say thanks to EA for not doing any further updates on SSX Tricky so I could play it on my Xbox 360. Oh sure, SSX 3 works… but SSX 3 SUCKED compared to Tricky. What I wanted was more tracks and some new riders for Tricky, what EA gave me was something less impressive than Tricky… and now it’s the only thing that will play on the Xbox 360. Thanks EA! This is almost as good as the C&C : Red Alert 2 thing… no updates for XP to fix any compatibility problems, but you’re sure as hell repackage it and re-sell it… bugs and all. What a crock!
So now I’m on my way to return BF2142… another disappointment from EA. I think i’ll just pre-order Enemy Territory : Quake Wars instead.
I’m officially supporting the Xbox 360
Okay, so i’ve now played all of the latest consoles several times. I’m gonna have to stick to my Xbox 360. No PS3 or Wii in my immediate future. As many problems as people have had with the 360, I love mine. It works perfectly. Of course now that I’ve said that, it’ll probably break tomorrow.
I’ve excluded the Wii from the running and decided to stick with true next generation consoles here. After I saw demo after demo with cartoon-esque graphics, lack of HD support (480p doesn’t count guys), and those super gimmicky controllers, I was sure that i’d never own a Wii. Sorry Nintendo, i’d have easily tossed you another $50 or so for a better GPU. Oh, and yes, I played Wii Sports, it’s fun and all, but I rarely have people over to my house and Zelda isn’t my thing. Red Steel was an indicator that i’d never really enjoy long hours of shooters with that controller. Gears of War on the 360 reminded me of what you could do with horsepower if you’ve got a powerhouse like Epic writing code.
Between the Xbox 360 and the PS3, it boils down to a few things in my opinion.
- Price – Can anyone actually afford to get ALL of the consoles anymore? Xbox 360 Premium at $399 and PS3 at *gasp* $599, then toss in a Wii at $249? No way i’m putting out that much just to have the entire set. In the previous generation of consoles, I had a Dreamcast, PS2, and Xbox. Of course, I waited until the PS2 & Xbox were all $199 each, and the DC was $99. So, for $500, I had them all. My “Gaming Experience” was top notch.
- HD media support – PS3 gives me the Blu-Ray drive. Pfffffffffffffffft. So what? I’m not buying anything HD-DVD or Blu-Ray until they come out with a standard or an affordable dual mode player. No offense kids, i’ve been down the early adopter road way too many times. Xbox 360 has the addon HD-DVD drive. Not buying that either for the time being. In the end, I want to PLAY GAMES with the thing.
- 1080p support – Both consoles do it. My TV upscales everything to 1080p anyway, so I personally can’t tell the difference between 1080i and 1080p. The only reason I notice 720p is because of the bars.
*Attention fanboys* Xbox 360 DOES do 1080p over the component outputs… trying to get an HDTV that does 1080p over component, that’s another story. You can thank the industry for persuading TV manufacturers into gimping their TVs to not support 1080p over anything but DVI or HDMI. There is enough bandwidth to run 1080p over component outputs. It’s just not digital. - Controllers – The PS3 controller has motion sensing… but no rumble? What the? Yes yes, I know. Sony and Immersion. I recently heard that they settled that and will be giving us a new controller with rumble. Thanks for not listening to what the customers really want and being bitchy about a few million bones to Immersion. Hint to Sony… JUST PAY THEM OFF! YOU MADE ENOUGH FROM PS1 and PS2… GET OVER IT AND GIVE ME MY RUMBLE. In the Microsoft arena, it’s more of the same, but somebody in Redmond listened. The controller is better sized this time, has better button placement, and it’s wireless! I love the wireless guys, it works quite well. Not to mention, being able to turn the console on and off from the controller ROCKS. Thanks again guys.
- Titles – In the glory days of the PS2, the other 3 (DC, GC, Xbox) competing consoles couldn’t keep up with the exclusive title rampage that was the PS2. Looks like those days are over. I think Sony just learned a hard lesson here. The cell is neat and all if I want to do Folding@Home or run a crazy Linux machine, but most people really don’t give a crap. I already have a Linux machine! (with a lot more peripherals I might add) I want to PLAY GAMES. I need titles to do that. Come back to me in a year when you’ve got the titles that the Xbox 360 has and then we’ll talk. Oh, and drop that price some too. $599 and you’re still losing money on each console sold? That’s got to be hurting right now. What the hell though… right? All of these years of proprietary formats must have paid off by now…. right? Betamax! No wait, that didn’t work. Mini-Disc! Nope… UMD! Oh crap, another flop. Well, hopefully somebody saved all of that cash from the millions and millions of PS1 and PS2 consoles that were sold.
- Online – MS continues to impress me with their improvements to Xbox Live for the 360. It’s so different from the old days. I’m very happy with it as it stands now and look forward to the next upgrade. Not to mention, it seems like every time I hit the marketplace, there’s more and more there for me to download. I love that.
Long live Xbox 360. Now let’s see if Sony can pull a rabbit out of their hat and give us what we want next time. It certainly appears as those Nintendo and Microsoft figured something out after their last attempts.
Can I call it or what? Nintendo and Sony prove my point.

In a previous posting. I cited the past history of Nintendo and their unwillingness to allow violent games to be published on their systems in the US. They’re “protecting” us.
DailyTech published an article today that shows how Nintendo AND Sony have both decided not to allow the new Rockstar title to be published on their consoles. I bet Rockstar is PISSED because of all of the times they’ve given Sony the edge on previous titles.
I hate to say it (again), but it looks like the X360 is the only console vendor right now that wants us to buy games, even if they’re 100% for adults only. I can’t believe Sony and Nintendo would be this shortsighted with their consoles. But hey, I don’t have to buy them either.
This is just wii-tarded
Posted by ekrunch in Rants, Technology on June 20, 2007
(in protest of the name being changed from “Revolution” to “wii”, the word “we” will be incorrectly spelled “wii” throughout this article)
So, if I hear one more thing about the “amazing power” of the Wii, I think i’m going to vomit. I’ve had many gaming consoles over the years, dating all the way back to the Atari 2600, Intellivision, and Colecovision… I have pretty much owned all of the major ones and several of the obscure ones. I just don’t get the fascination of Wii. It’s a Gamecube with a trick controller! Sure sure, it has more horsepower than the GC, but not a ton.
The other thing.. have wii forgotten about Nintendo? Have wii forgotten about the days of the NES? When vendors were strong armed into selling more Nintendo. Does anyone remember that when Nintendo was in power, you had to agree to certain “conditions” to stock Nintendo products? Here’s a good one… you had to stock MORE Nintendo than any other competing product in order to stock Nintendo. If were a Sega shop, you had to make sure to have more Nintendo products on display at ALL times, otherwise Nintendo would pull your card. So basically, they got in early and got the big titles, then proceeded to break every rule of fair competition. Granted, they’re not the only ones… most companies have done it at one time or another. But still… practices like this should be discouraged by voting with our dollars and not buying things from people with horribly crappy business practices.
The other thing… violent video games. Sure sure… wii need parental controls in video games. Educated parents can disable all violent games in modern consoles like the X360. Of course, most parents don’t ever bother to look at all of those ratings and such that get shoved down my throat. So, I applaud Nintendo for their efforts in stopping excessive violence in video games, but hey, i’m an adult and I WANT MY EXCESSIVE VIOLENCE!!!! Don’t take away my right to be an adult.
So yeah, let’s not forget what the gaming world was like under Nintendo’s reign. Think twice and vote with your dollars. Rent games, get demos, don’t just buy everything b/c it looks hot on the TV commercial. Demand that game producers provide those demos and PROVE that their games are good by letting you play them. Shop smart people… these companies will OWN us (again) if wii don’t start shopping smart.
And really people… it’s a controller with a motion sensor in it. Come on now…
(The Intellidick.com blog will now return to the normal way of spelling we.)
